After checking in, enjoy the most graceful of Balinese dance, the Legong, which is characterised by emphasized hand and eye movements and accompanied by the Gamelan (an instrumental ensemble, mainly percussion of gongs, cymbals and flutes). It is a very stylized dance performed by three dancers who tell the story of Rangkesari, a young maiden captured by King Lasem.

Continue by road to Tunjuk village to take part in a community based program aimed to involve you in the life of a Balinese farming community. On arrival to the village, meet your local hosts and enter a Balinese family compound. Here you will learn how to weave palm fronds into the designs often used as ceremonies. After all this activity it is time for a local Balinese lunch in a bamboo restaurant.

We bid farewell to our hosts and continue to Belimbing Village.

Take a leisurely breakfast or perhaps one last swim in the ocean before heading off to the healing waters of Banjar Hot Springs. These picturesque hot springs, set amidst lush tropical gardens, contain two main pools with warm sulphur water pouring from the mouths of dragons, or Naga’s as they are locally known.

It’s time to head over the mountain range, travelling past coffee plantations, terracing rice fields and cocoa and a myriad of spice plantations before stopping at the viewpoint over the ‘twin lakes’ or Lake Tamblingan and Lake Buyan. Sample some of the local coffee at this photo stop before heading down the town of Bedugul.

Stop at the major water temple of Pura Ulun Danu Temple, founded in the 17th century. This is perhaps one of the most photographed temples in Bali and is dedicated to Dewi Danu, the goddess of water, featuring a beautiful thatched Hindu Meru which seems to float on the lake. This temple is also home to a Buddhist shrine and a small mosque.

Continue through the vegetable farms with views to the southern coast before a buffet lunch overlooking verdant rice terraces.

After lunch, take a 1 hour bicycle tour along the cascading rice fields and village roads of the UNESCO heritage listed Jatiluwih, the oldest and most complex subak terracing system in Bali.

Travelling along village roads we head to the village of Kedisan on the shores of Lake Batur.

People of this village have an interesting burial custom which is unique to the Aga people; they do not bury or cremate their dead, but place them in bamboo cages by the side of the aromatic Kemenyan tree. Collections of human bones and skulls can be seen on stone platforms at designated ceremonial sites dotted around the village.

Delve deeper into the distinctive Aga culture with a guided walk through the village before returning by boat to the mainland.
